Event History

At its origins Festivale was a multi-cultural food and social event held at the Australian-Italian Club which likely drew some inspiration from the Launceston Mardi Gras of the 1950s and ‘60s that featured music, street theatre and parades.

The first Festivale in 1988 was organised as part of Australia’s bicentenary celebrations and was an outstanding success. From this first event, Festivale has transformed itself into an iconic Tasmanian festival, drawing people from across the state, interstate and overseas to celebrate what Tasmania has to offer the world. Since 1988, Festivale has played a key role in the development of Launceston’s reputation as a vibrant regional centre offering a relaxed, friendly and quality lifestyle. It has built local pride in the city and what Tasmania has to offer.
