2009 TASMANIAN TOURISM EVENTS & FESTIVALS WINNER

Launceston’s City Park is preparing to host a celebration of all the great things Tasmania has to offer in gourmet food, wine and entertainment.

Tasmania’s premier lifestyle event, Festivale, will be held between February 12 and 14, and everyone is invited to come and join the celebrations in Launceston’s historic City Park.

For three days - Friday, February 12 – Sunday, February 14 - Festivale 2010 will offer a menu of quality Tasmanian food and wine mixed with music, dance and street theatre. The event is expected to attract a crowd in excess of 45,000 patrons.

Festivale will feature more than 70 food, wine and beer stalls, all featuring Tasmanian-grown and Tasmanian-made produce. Newcomers on the "food and wine trail" include Billabong Bar & Grill, the Prickly Cactus, Dickens Cider, The Souk:Taste of Morocco and Taverners Boutique Brewery.

The State’s most prestigious wineries – Clover Hill, Josef Chromy and Moores Hill Estate among them - as well as many highly regarded boutique wines will be available. Wine will be available for tasting as well as by the glass.

After a successful return to Festivale last year, Paddock To Plate will give patrons the chance to meet some of Tasmania’s emerging producers of gourmet products on the Sunday, between 10am and 3.30pm. A fresh highlight will be Conservatory Cooking, where five Tasmanian chefs will give cooking demonstrations throughout the day. Award-winning chef Fiona Hoskin, of Fee & Me award-winning restaurant fame will co-ordinate the event, which will be held in the freshly renovated John Hart Conservatory.

Award-winning Festivale is also about entertainment. From funky reggae and groove to retro disco and big band sounds, the entertainment program will feature a non-stop line-up from three stages around the park each day.

But it’s rock’n’roll that will bring the evening celebrations alive on the Frontline Stage. Ross Hannaford’s Reggae Rock and Ross Wilson and the Urban Legends will kick-start the ``party’’ on Friday night, and Daryl Braithwaite will perform on Saturday evening. Chain Reaction: The John Farnham Story Live, a Melbourne tribute band, will be in the Park on Sunday.

Tasmanian bands Victor Charlie Charlie, Lounge Machine and female rock sensation Steph Sowerby, as well as the soothing sounds of the Ross Challender Band are on the play list throughout the weekend,

Another popular feature of the Festivale weekend package, The Festivale Photography Prize, is now accepting entries. Once again there are many prizes to be won in this competition, which is open to people of all ages. There is a special category for Students and a People’s Choice Award.

The two main criteria is that the photograph must have been taken in Tasmania and if featuring food, wine or beer that must be of Tasmanian origin.

Entries selected for judging and the winning images will be on exhibition at Design Centre Tasmania, cnr Tamar and Brisbane streets, throughout Festivale and the following week, 9am to 5.30pm daily.

Festivale Photography Prize 2010

Entries are now being accepted for Festivale Photography Prize 2010.

Food, wine and entertainment – the three themes that make Festivale such a success – are the focus of the Festivale Photography Prize.

After overwhelming response since Festivale 2008’s inaugural photography prize, organisers are eagerly anticipating a high calibre of entries expected for February 2010.

The Festivale Photography Prize is open to anyone who can operate a camera. The main criteria is that the photograph must be taken in Tasmania and feature some aspect of food, wine or entertainment, e.g. growing fresh produce, food preparation and delivery, grape cultivation, bottling, singers, dancers or musical instruments. Another strict criteria is that any food or wine items that appear in photography also must be Tasmanian.

Entrants have the chance to win cash prizes of $700, $200 and $100 if judged first, second or third respectively. There will also be a prize for the best photograph submitted by a student and a People’s Choice prize for the photograph voted as most popular by Festivale patrons. Stallards Camera House, Launceston, will kindly donate prizes for these two awards.

"This photographic competition continues to give Festivale an exciting and fresh angle for 2010,’’ says Festivale chair Lou Clark. "It offers a great opportunity for all members of the community to actively participate in what has become one of Tasmania’s premier events.’’

Festivale has just celebrated back-to-back Tasmanian Tourism Festivals & Event awards and recently was voted as the most Outstanding Visitor Experience in the CGU Launceston Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards 2009.

"The prospect of having a print on public display at Design Centre Tasmania and maybe even winning a prize should also be wonderful incentives’’ Ms Clark said.

Cash prize winners and the student prize will be announced at Festivale on Friday, February 12, from the Frontline Stage. The People’s Choice award will be announced at the close of Festivale on Sunday, February 14.

Student entry fee of $5 includes submission for 1 or 2 photos. Students are eligible for all prize categories. The $10 adult entry fee includes submission for 1 or 2 photos.

Photographs selected for judging will be exhibited for public viewing for 11 days at Design Centre Tasmania, corner Tamar and Brisbane streets. The exhibition will be open from Saturday, February 13, until Sunday, February 21, from 9.30am to 5.30pm.

For the first time, entries will be able to be lodged through email. For all criteria and entry requirements, go to www.festivale.com.au or call 6334 9990.
